National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW) (US)
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW), for the 20th year running, is taking place in the United States from February 25th to March 3rd.
The key take-home message for NEDAW 2007 is “Be comfortable in your genes. Wear jeans that fit the REAL you.”
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week aims to highlight the strong influences that genetics and other biological factors have over body shape and size, and why it is unwise to fight against them as they are beyond our control.
Trying to become something we are not in order to fit into the latest fashionable ‘skinny jeans’ can lead to unhealthy diet choices, poor body image and possibly an eating disorder.
NEDAW wants people to focus on wearing jeans they feel comfortable in and which fit their natural body shape, rather than try to change their body shape to fit jeans that are not really suitable for their particular body type.
Researchers are finding more information about the effects of genetics on eating disorders, and how a person’s genes may make them more susceptible to developing an eating disorder when combined with certain environmental influences.
There are many ‘Great Jeans Giveaway’ events taking place across America this week, whereby people are being encouraged to donate their jeans, old and new, which do not comfortably fit them.
