Kate Winslet on the Size Zero Debate

Kate Winslet has something to say about the size zero debate. Four-times Oscar nominated Hollywood actress Kate, has spoken out against the trend of skinny actresses and models, labelling the current fashion to be a size zero as 'unbelievably disturbing'.

Kate shot to fame in the film blockbuster Titanic, in which she played the character of rich girl Rose DeWitt Bukater, but has always tried to remain grounded.

When asked about the 'size zero' debate on the BBC's Sunday AM (10th December 2006) she admitted it is a subject on which she feels strongly and has been known to 'rant' on about. So strongly in fact, she will not allow magazines containing images of skinny women in her house because they are so damaging.

Kate resents such images of 'perfection' that seem to be getting thinner and thinner, and is worried about the effect they could have on her 6 year old daughter and other impressionable girls and young women.

She stresses that it is not important to be thin in order to find success and happiness, and she hopes she is a good example of this, with a successful career, marriage and happy family.

The importance of good role models is something Kate also feels strongly about, citing the likes of 'normally sized' actresses such as Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep among hers as they set a good example.

Emma Thompson even told Kate that she would never speak to her again if she lost weight, and Kate is indeed known for her curves and portraying 'real' women in the film roles she chooses.

Kate has always taken her responsibility as a role model very seriously, and it is not the first time she has spoken out about the importance of being healthy and normal, rather than trying to be thin to be beautiful.
